Last week I listened to Lynda Gratton talking about what she thinks are the 3 key shifts we need to make to be prepared for the future work. As the world is changing rapidly due to technology; weare facing choices and opportunities we have never had before.
She highlights 3 big shifts:
1. Forget about being a generalist if you know a little bit about a lot you are simply competing with wikipedia. You have to learn a mastery.
2. It is not about competing with others, it is about learning how to build really deep and important relationships with a regenerative crowd or with a big ideas crowd.
3. It is about making hard decisions about the life you are going to live. Do I work to make money that makes me happy or do I work to be productive, excited and creating innovative things which I feel great about?
Lynda´s webinar was inspiring for all of those who are already embracing these changes, working collaboratively, trying out new ideas and leaving behind hierarchies and structures that were developed during the industrial revolution. As Lynda pointed out, these changes are not cyclical but structural, which means they are here to stay.
Regarding the type of work we will face she talked about two sorts of work; the ones that will requirehigh level of collaboration and knowledge and other jobs which will require skills that can not be outsourced, like working in a restaurant, caring for other people etc. Some jobs positioned in the middle, like clerical jobs and administration will go away because of technology and outsourcing.
The impact on individuals is clear and goes in one direction where we will find co-creation, social engagement and micro-entrepreneurship instead of building a future of isolation, fragmentation and exclusion. Instead of becoming an isolated competitor you will need to be prepared to become an innovative connector. The key element to succeed will be how you connect with other people, how you are part of a regenerative community-as more people are living away from family, this community are your closer friends- and also how you link with a big ideas crowd-through the difference new ideas come-.
Lastly but not least important the big change of becoming an impassioned producer instead of continuing to be a voracious consumer. As we look for work we find meaningful, not only to buy stuff.
A few questions were asked by the participants and other key things were remarked: organisations to be connected with what happens outside and inside the community, introducing a coaching mentality in organisations, incorporating transparency and values and not only leaving social media to IT. As people will focus more attention in happiness, future employees will become thoughtful about what they expect of companies, they will work on themselves to know who they are and where they are going.
