In economics the word “internationalization” means the process of involving enterprises in international markets. What does it mean for thousands of professionals and young graduates in Spain?. If you ask them they will say that not only companies are seeking to sell their products abroad but also people are thinking how they can move to other locations to sell their expertise and talent.
Spanish people have always been quite reluctant to think about moving and living abroad; they have been taught to think locally and to aspire to be in a secure and familiar environment. Even if that meant, in some cases, to step down from their job perspectives and to hold on a job that was not making the most use of their skills, talents and qualifications.
In the last months I have delivered a few workshops and talks in Universities (UDL,URV,UIC). Graduates want to know how they can find their desired job in other locations. What they carry in theirrucksack now, regarding languages and qualifications become key to see if their knowledge is demanded abroad….However for me other skills are vital: flexibility, strength, resilience, curiosity and accepting that there is nothing secure in this life you can hold on to . Being able to change your views about the way you see things and also accepting that success is determined by your own happinessand not what others are expecting from you.
I sense that a majority of them will accept this internationalization as a part of what they have to do, with their eyes put back in returning sooner than later, with the expectation that they will become better considered and instantly contracted when they come back….that is a subject for another post. For me the message is clear “ take this as an opportunity rather than a burden, even if you never thought of doing this because you always wanted to be near your family and friends, transform it to the positive. It is the attitude that is key to any success in life, how you take things on and how you can transform them.
If you are a professional with a solid expertise, don´t be put off by language and culture barriers, if you are unhappy where you are, why don´t you find out what are you worth abroad? You might be surprised to find out that they will not require you an impeccable English, rather you as a person, your willingness to work and learn and to share your expertise where is needed. This is what a potential client comment to me a few weeks ago, “ There is no need for me to run to find a job abroad but I feel the need of seeing how do they value my expertise abroad and I want to prepare myself for the future”.
Might be you are a graduate seeking your first opportunity abroad, might be you are a disappointed professional seeking a new future or you just want to know if there is something for you outside the national market…Here is where I can help you to position yourself in the international market, to see what is for you outside –resources, expertise, international network and tools-but above of all my own personal experience of having walked the same path.
